Trustee Area 1
Andrea Yamasaki
Governing Board Member, Orange Unified School District, Trustee Area 1
Having had the privilege to serve the Orange Unified School District that served my own three children, I understand the enormous impact school board decisions have on our students, their education, and their future. I take this responsibility seriously, which is evident in the thousands of hours spent visiting school
sites, meeting with parents, and engaging with members of our community. Parents and community members should have a voice on the board. I am that voice.
I am honored to serve as the current President of the Orange Unified School District School Board. During my tenure as a school board trustee, I am proud of the accomplishments our district has achieved:
- Award-winning schools – Apple Distinguished Schools, National Blue Ribbon, CSBA Golden Bell Awards, and CA Gold Ribbon Schools.
- Expanded mental health services for students.
- Successful improvements and reinvestment in campus facilities.
- Including 4 new STEM buildings and the new Fred Kelly Stadium.
- Enhanced academic programs and opportunities for our students such as virtual academy, language immersion programs, STEAM programs and dual enrollment partnership with Santiago Canyon College.
- Saving taxpayers millions of dollars by restructuring our pension debt.
- Utilizing cost-effective clean energy with solar panels at many of our schools and one of the first districts in Orange County to establish a fleet of electric buses.
Our students deserve access to a well-rounded education that
includes the arts, technology, sports, and career pathways that will
tap into their potential and prepare them to be college and/or
career ready upon graduation.
My goals and priorities for the next term:
- Work with local law enforcement agencies to ensure safe and secure campuses.
- Improve the social and emotional well-being of our students through interventions and increased access to counselors.
- Create opportunities for students to connect with their schools and community.
- Increase student achievement through tutoring and teacher support.
- Have strong fiscal oversight of bond implementation and taxpayer monies.
Having served actively on the boards of Parent Organization and Education Foundations and having recently completed my CA School Boards Association Masters in Governance series of classes, I am fully committed to investing my time and energy to better serve the community I love.
I am honored to have the support of parents, OUSD teachers, and local community leaders; it would be an honor to have your vote in November.

Angela Williams
Teacher/Parent
I’ve lived in our community for over 30 years and devoted my life to health and education. I began my career as a clinical cancer researcher at Children’s Hospital of OC (CHOC). My love for science and research quickly became a love for teaching high school students as I moved my focus from lab work to homework.
I began teaching science at the high school level in 2012 and have spent the last decade pouring into my students. Because of my unique background, the district opened its doors for me to develop and implement a biotechnology pathway at Orange High School.
My husband and children all graduated from the same OUSD schools I taught in, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the teachers that helped them achieve a quality education. But as many of my colleagues know, the district has recently turned away from back-to-basics education. Instead, special interests and
politics take precedence over parents. This shift in mindset led to school shutdowns that disproportionately hurt low income families and many students have yet to recover socially, emotionally, and academically.
Take for example Orange High School where I taught: only 16.36% of students now meet or exceed state standards in science. The worst part is that success rates across the district have declined dramatically due to poor pandemic policies.
As your trustee I will:
- Shift the focus to supporting students and parents;
- Work with parents and students to discover the best educational pathways available to them;
- Help develop and implement new STEM programs for our students;
- Focus on back-to-basics education and curriculum;
- Keep education dollars focused in the classroom, not on special
- interests.
My candidacy is supported by leaders in Orange County education
such as:
- Mari Barke, Orange County Board of Education, Area 2
- Dr. Ken Williams, Orange County Board of Education, Area 3
- Tim Shaw, Orange County Board of Education, Area 4
- Dr. Lisa Sparks, Orange County Board of Education, Area 5
- John Ortega, Orange Unified Board of Education, Area 2
- Angie Schleuter-Rumsey, Orange Unified Board of Education, Area 6
- Rick Ledesma, Orange Unified Board of Education, Area 7
Student voices and concerns are heard in my classrooms. I’d be honored to have your support and your vote. To learn more please visit WilliamsforOUSD.com.
Trustee Area 4 (Villa Park’s Area)
Kathy Moffat
Governing Board Member, Orange Unified School District, Area 4
As an experienced OUSD trustee, I bring a wealth of knowledge, experience, community connection and trusted leadership to this position. Recent challenges required strong leadership, dedicated staff, determined students and families, and Orange Unified School District met these challenges.
Because of our responsible fiscal policy, OUSD was able to immediately act when Covid closed schools, providing each student with a device, and online learning began immediately. We provided hot spots for connectivity, and meals to students in need.
I believe the best learning occurs in the classroom so we worked to become the first OC district to return safely to inperson learning. Staff implemented health department-mandated protocols, determined teachers focused on student needs, and children and families worked in new and different ways. All persevered, and students learned. OUSD offered the option of continued online learning with their same classroom teacher. Few districts did.
As your trustee, it has been my privilege to contribute leadership to OUSD’s many accomplishments.
Under my leadership, OUSD accelerated its commitment to mental health and wellness, hired more counselors and school nurses than ever, and opened wellness centers. Student safety and wellness are top priorities and belong in school safety plans.
Strong academics are always a priority, and we implemented an Extended Learning Opportunity Program, to give students more time for instruction. OUSD schools continuously excel – we boast National Blue Ribbon Schools, a California Model Continuation School, three on U.S. News’ Best High Schools list, many California Gold Ribbon Schools, Project Lead the Way winners, and CSBA Golden Bell awards. To provide families choices, we opened Edge Virtual Academy K-12 and offer dual language immersion schools featuring Spanish and Mandarin. Career pathways like aviation, culinary arts, medical, construction, and video/film production have increased under my leadership.
Measure S funds provided successful completion of state-of-the-art STEM Centers at all four high schools, and Phase 2 modernization is beginning. OUSD alone boasts excellence like this. With our credit rating of AA1, careful bond planning and fiscal management, Measure S dollars go farther. Responsible fiscal management allowed us to modernize Fred Kelly Stadium, build a new pool at El Modena, install new playground equipment at every elementary, renovate restrooms, and more. Solar panels at fifteen sites save millions of dollars for OUSD and help save the planet.
I pledge to continue my mission to keep OUSD moving forward, and I’d be honored to have your vote.
Madison Klovstad Miner
Educator/Parent
I am an educator, mama bear of four children and active participant in the Orange Unified community for the last 37 years. Quality education has always been a passion of mine. After college, I began my career in Santa Ana Unified School District as a speech therapist for mostly students with special needs and disabilities until my husband and I decided I’d stay at home to care for our growing family. I am passionate about supporting and protecting all students throughout Orange Unified School District.
As an educator within the district, it was common knowledge that special interest groups run the show in Orange Unified. They’d often try to stop student transfers to other schools or districts, influence curriculum and increase spending. I’m running to change this status quo and bring a “parent first” perspective to the school board. Once I’m elected, I promise to:
- Cut wasteful spending and return tax dollars to the classrooms where they belong.
- Protect our parents’ rights with medical and school choice decisions.
- Always support parents whose students need to transfer schools or districts.
- Adopt better options for health and ethnic studies curriculum.
- Push back against overreaching Sacramento bureaucrats trying to control our curriculum.
- Bring a spirit of accountability to both the district’s budget and the curriculum.
School closures did not work for many of our children, and many students need additional attention after virtual learning to get back to where they need to be. I will ensure the district provides additional resources to students that need them.
Like many of my colleagues, my campaign to create a parent-first district is backed by education leaders in the district and across the county, including:
- Mari Barke, Orange County Board of Education, Area 2
- Dr. Ken Williams, Orange County Board of Education, Area 3
- Tim Shaw, Orange County Board of Education, Area 4
- Dr. Lisa Sparks, Orange County Board of Education, Area 5
- John Ortega, Orange Unified Board of Education, Area 2
- Angie Schleuter-Rumsey, Orange Unified Board of Education, Area 6
Rick Ledesma, Orange Unified Board of Education, Area 7 I couldn’t be more excited to be running for Orange Unified School Board and would be honored to have your vote. In addition, I’d love to hear your thoughts on how our schools could improve. Please email me at [email protected] or learn more about my candidacy at madison4ousd.com.
Trustee Area 5
Kristin “Kris” Erickson
Orange Unified School District, Governing Board Member, Trustee Area 5
It has been an honor to serve on the Orange Unified School Board in a community I have called home for nearly 50 years.
My husband, two children and I are all proud graduates of OUSD, and I feel blessed to be part of such a caring and family-friendly community. I am committed to continue working hard to keep our local schools safe, strong, and focused on the important education of our children – the foundation of our future.
I volunteered extensively in our district for nearly two decades before being elected in 2018 to serve as your school board member. Since then, I have honored my pledge to put student needs first, to be ethical and transparent, and to create a more cohesive and trustworthy board.
From visiting campuses regularly, to engaging students, parents, teachers, school administrators, and community members, to studying each issue thoroughly, I have dedicated myself to students’ needs and I am proud to have earned the support of a wide-ranging group of parents, teachers, employees, community members and electeds.
Under my leadership, we created a long-term plan for OUSD to improve existing educational programs, add new program choices within our district, and upgrade and modernize our campuses.
We saved local taxpayers millions of dollars through responsible planning, balanced budgeting, and tough decision-making, while:
- Being the first district in Orange County to safely return students to full-time classroom instruction after COVID shutdowns
- Increasing the number of counselors, psychologists, school nurses
- Achieving a 97.4% graduation rate, substantially above the state average
- Constructing state-of-the-art Science, Technology, and Engineering Centers
- Funding improvements to existing classrooms, playgrounds, sports facilities, and restrooms
- Creating the largest K-12 Career Technical Program in Orange County
- Leading the way to an all-electric bus fleet, solar-powered campuses, and green infrastructure for long-term taxpayer savings and responsible stewardship
Each OUSD student is unique, and I am committed to ensuring every student reaches their highest potential. Some will choose college, while others will not. Our college pathways have always been strong, but I will continue my fight to continually improve all our academic and Career Technical programs to ensure every graduate has choices and is capable, confident, and ready to succeed upon graduation.
Let’s keep Orange Unified moving forward together! I respectfully request your vote.

Timothy Surridge
Educational Consultant
For the last 25 years I have been blessed to serve students as a
teacher, varsity basketball coach, technology learning specialist,
and as a school administrator. My passion in life has been to work
alongside our students and help them understand their strengths.
I previously served as a Governing Boardmember for the Orange
Unified School District. During my tenure on the board I led efforts
to form our District’s first full language immersion school, the
restoration of art and music programs in all of our elementary
schools, and the adoption of solar energy and automated external
defibrillators district wide.
I’m running again as I have become alarmed at the district’s lack
of focus regarding parent rights, academic excellence, and the
outsized emphasis on cultural issues not related to student learning
or success.
If elected, I’ll commit to:
- Support parental rights to send their children to schools that best fit each student and family;
- Ensure transparency in classroom curriculum;
- Cut waste in the budget and make sure education dollars are devoted to our classrooms;
- Resist further implementation of CRT, DEI, and SEL programs;
- Expand breadth of programs for skilled trades.
It’s important to keep our schools open for children, restore parents
as the most vital partner in supporting our students’ learning, and
provide meaningful choices in educational options.
My candidacy is supported by education leaders in OUSD and
county wide. Among my supporters are:
- Mari Barke, Orange County Board of Education, Area 2
- Dr. Ken Williams, Orange County Board of Education, Area 3
- Tim Shaw, Orange County Board of Education, Area 4
- Dr. Lisa Sparks, Orange County Board of Education, Area 5
- John Ortega, Orange Unified Board of Education, Area 2
- Angie Schleuter-Rumsey, Orange Unified Board of Education, Area 6
- Rick Ledesma, Orange Unified Board of Education, Area 7
While the list goes on, my number one focus isn’t to gather endorsements, but to support parents and ensure student success over the next decade.
I’d be honored to have your vote. For more information please visit my website “SurridgeforOUSD.com.”
Trustee Area 7
Rick Ledesma
Governing Board Member, Orange Unified School District, Area 7
I am running for re-election to continue my advocacy for students and parental rights. I believe the focus must remain on students and their families, not special interests. Parents are in the best position to make primary decisions for their students.
As a community member and parent, I understand that all children deserve a high quality education. My wife of 24 years and I have raised our children in this community and continue to give back by helping to make our public education system better. With my career in corporate finance and accounting , I have unique insight into budgeting and management team building.
In the last 22 years, my experience as a Board Member in education and finance background has helped me manage educational and budgetary issues. This position isn’t supposed to be political, one of our top responsibilities is making sure the Orange Unified School District has enough money on hand to retain quality teachers and offer high quality programs for our students. Over the last 22 years I have:
- Focused on students, not politics;
- Led the efforts to approve viable charter schools;
- Listened to parental concerns regarding their students’ education;
- Voted to approve every parent requested interdistrict transfer;
- Fought to keep our tax dollars in local schools, not Sacramento;
- Cut waste and held the department accountable for its actions.
- Eliminated over $60,000,000 in unfunded liability.
Every child has a unique educational pathway that works best for them. Education should start with giving parents the choice of where to send their children. My proven history of managing OUSD’s budget while still focusing on our students has led me to gain the support from education leaders across the county, including:
- Mari Barke, Orange County Board of Education, Area 2
- Dr. Ken Williams, Orange County Board of Education, Area 3
- Tim Shaw, Orange County Board of Education, Area 4
- Dr. Lisa Sparks, Orange County Board of Education, Area 5
- John Ortega , Orange Unified Board of Education, Area 2
- Angie Schleuter-Rumsey, Orange Unified Board of Education, Area 6
I’d be honored to have your vote. For more information, please visit my website: LedesmaforOUSD.com.
Mike Nguyen
Engineer/Businessman
The United States has given me opportunities to attend collegesto earn my Bachelor and Master’s degrees in electronics. I’m a product of public education. I have worked in the aerospace engineering field for 25 years and also more than 30 years in real estate including construction in Orange County. I’ve achieved the “American Dream”. I now want to pay back and help our young students, the future of our country.
Our working parents and children are struggling to find quality education and fighting off dangers brought on from societal upheavals and social media in the digital age. In addition, too many governmental programs from Washington to Sacramento have poisoned the minds of our children.
The mission of education is to educate our children with practical learning such as Math, Physic, Chemistry, Science, Reading or Writing. Parents should be allowed to be partners in the education
of their children.
If elected, togher with Parents, I will dedicate myself to tackle the above issues to make sure that our students learn a real education to prepare for higher education, have superior knowledge to pursue a good career to support themselves and their families and be productive citizens.

Sean Griffin
Teacher
As a public school teacher in my 24th year, and the parent of an Orange Unified graduate who received services for her disability, I have worked with the everyday, real world impact of board decisions.
I want to bring my extensive experience and expertise to the OUSD School Board to work as hard as I can to support student success in a well-rounded education, while preparing them for life’s challenges and for future opportunities, whether a career after high school or college bound. In addition to being a teacher for students receiving Special Education services, I have spent years volunteering as a coach, mentor, and student advocate, both within and outside of OUSD. Therefore, I pledge to be student and parent centered and make decisions that continue the progress, improvement, and growth that OUSD has recently enjoyed.
I will be open-minded and collaborative to find solutions to issues our district is confronting, including school safety, structural improvements, and a sensible financial plan.
I am honored to be endorsed by leaders throughout our community, including OUSD Board President Andrea Yamasaki, Orange City Council Member Ana Gutierrez, and many others.
Please vote to keep moving OUSD forward. Vote Sean Griffin for
