The City of Villa Park announced a reorganization of the City Council at its December 17, 2019 meeting and, as anticipated, Robbie Pitts was selected as the new mayor of Villa Park. In a year that saw a return to civility on the City Council there was little suspense with this vote.
Established protocol was followed and the Mayor Pro Tem, Robbie Pitts, was unanimously voted in as the next Mayor by the council members. Tradition then continued with the unanimous selection of Crystal Miles as Mayor Pro Tem, who compiled the most votes in the past election. Under this tradition all City Council members will serve a year as Mayor Pro Tem and then Mayor.
“I look forward to this next year and I promise to represent this city in the way you expect and in concert with the values that we all strive.” Mayor Robbie Pitts
The position of “mayor” present in this type of government is largely a ceremonial title, and is selected by the council from among its members. The mayor presides over city council meetings and signs all ordinances and resolutions adopted and contracts approved by the City Council. The mayor cannot directly appoint or remove officials, and lacks veto power over City Council votes.
