The City of Villa Park announced a reorganization of the City Council at its December 15, 2020 meeting and, as anticipated, Crystal Miles was selected as the new mayor of Villa Park.
Established protocol was followed and the Mayor Pro Tem, Crystal Miles, was unanimously voted in as the next Mayor by the council members. Tradition then continued with the selection of Chad Zimmerman as Mayor Pro Tem, who compiled the second most votes in the 2016 election. Under this tradition all City Council members will serve a year as Mayor Pro Tem and then Mayor.
The position of “mayor” present in this type of government is largely a ceremonial title, and is selected by the council from among its members. The mayor presides over city council meetings and signs all ordinances and resolutions adopted and contracts approved by the City Council. The mayor cannot directly appoint or remove officials, and lacks veto power over City Council votes.
